Honey Glazed Ham for the Holidays!

  • All hams are sold pre-cooked, no matter the size or style. So the only instructions needed are how to glaze and reheat. It’s okay to bake a ham without a glaze, but a glaze does help tenderize and neutralize the salty flavor.
  • Serve ham as the main course for Thanksgiving, Christmas, or Easter. It’s a welcome treat that is also super versatile to use past the main dish, too! Here are some “hamazing” recipes that use ham! Try this tasty Ham and Cheese Quiche or an easy Ham And Pea Pasta Bake.
  • Use a bone-in ham for delicious flavor, or use a whole, half, smoked, or spiral cut ham. All options taste great slow-cooked with this sweet honey glaze! Got extra glaze? Save it for some Glazed Sweet Potatoes.

What’s in Honey Glazed Ham?

GLAZE: The sweetness of honey, apple juice, and brown sugar is perfectly complemented by Dijon mustard. Salty ham meets a sweet and savory glaze that will have everyone coming back for seconds!

Variations

A good glaze is made of sweet, sour, and savory elements. For the best honey-glazed baked ham, any combination of these will do.

  • Maple syrup, light molasses or even orange marmalade are good substitutes for honey. Apple cider, pineapple, or orange juice can also be subbed in for the apple juice as well.
  • Insert whole cloves where the score marks meet on the outside of the ham, and place pineapple rings for a beautiful presentation, too! Cut red maraschino cherries in half and place them in the center of each pineapple ring, simply secure them with toothpicks cut in half. It’s a stunning looking entree that will wow any crowd.

Tips for Honey Glazed Ham

  • Make sure the brown sugar is fully dissolved in the glaze before using and keep it warm between the glazing stages.
  • Check the internal temperature of the ham every 30 minutes after the initial 90-minute bake.
  • Check the internal temperature of the ham to avoid overcooking it. Insert a meat thermometer in the thickest part of the ham and once the temperature reaches 130°F, remove the ham from the oven. The temperature will come up to the required 140°F degrees as the ham rests.

Storing

Keep leftover honey-glazed baked ham in a covered container in the refrigerator up to 5 days. Serve cold or reheat ham steaks in a skillet. Save the ham bone to make a big pot of Split Pea and Ham Soup! Freeze ham steaks with parchment paper between the slices in zippered freezer bags with the date labeled on the outside for up to 6 weeks.
