I know I used to think applesauce would be hard to make. But it’s really simple to make. With only two ingredients needed, we make ours without sugar, you can have homemade applesauce ready in a little over half an hour.

There are only a few kitchen items you’ll need to make this easy applesauce.

Items You Need:
StockPot
Paring Knife
Hand Blender or Potato Masher

A stockpot and a nice paring knife are all you really need but to make the process of coring and peeling the apples a little quicker these items can be helpful.

A Melon Baller, I use a melon baller to remove the stem and blossom ends. Then I use it to scoop out the core too. The melon baller works really quick.

A Peeler, Corer, Slicer either in a clamp base or a suction base, If you have one of these handy gadgets you can peel, core, and slice apples really quickly. If you’ll be doing a lot of applesauce you might want to pick one of these up.

While either of these tools can make the job of peeling, coring, and slicing the apples go a lot quicker you don’t have to have them. A paring knife will work well too.

Step One

Step Two

Add enough water to cover the bottom of your stockpot. I added 3/4 cup water and then added the apples. You need a little water to keep the apples from sticking but don’t add too much. You don’t want watery applesauce.

Step Three

Bring the apples and water to a boil and then turn down and simmer until the apples are soft. Be sure to cover the pan while the apples are cooking. I simmered the batch I made for about 25 minutes.

Keep stirring occasionally and if the mixture becomes too thick add a little more water. I ended up adding 1/4 cup more water during the cooking process. You want the apples to cook but not stick and burn to the bottom of the pan.

Step Four

Once the apples are done cooking remove them from the heat. Smash or blend the cooked apples into sauce. I find the easiest way to puree the apples is to use my hand blender. It’s quick and works great. If you don’t have a hand blender you can use a potato masher instead.

Step Five

We don’t add sugar to our homemade applesauce. We find it’s sweet enough with just the apples but if you want a sweeter applesauce add sugar to taste and stir to dissolve.

The mellow sweetness of toasted sugar adds complexity. Apple cider vinegar helps brighten cooked fruit. Using skin-on fruit improves both flavor and color in the finished product. Aromatics like cinnamon, orange peel, and rose water intensify the flavor of the apples.

How good is homemade applesauce? ›

It doesn't just smell good—it tastes good too! It's tangy, lightly sweet, and full of spiced apple flavor. You can make it chunky if you like your applesauce with some texture, or you can blend it if you want it totally smooth. Either way, it's delicious.

Manufacturers often add extra vitamin C to commercially made applesauce to help preserve the color. Homemade applesauce could also be higher in vitamin C if either lemon juice or other fruits that contain vitamin C are added. Applesauce provides a limited amount of vitamins and minerals.

What apples to avoid when making applesauce? ›

For applesauce, you essentially want the opposite—apples that will cook down and mash well to create a flavorful sauce. At the same time, avoid apples that are mealy in texture and turn to mush when cooked down. Many cooks avoid Red Delicious for that reason.

How many apples does it take to can applesauce? ›

Peel, core and quarter apples. You will need 3 to 3-1/2 pounds per quart of applesauce.

Why is my homemade applesauce pink? ›

If you leave the skins on, you'll end up with pink applesauce, like mine, if you've used red apples. You'll want to puree the applesauce if you've left the skins on and strain it, otherwise, it can get “stringy” and I don't care for that texture.

Is it cheaper to make applesauce or buy it? ›

Not only does the homemade version taste better, but it's way cheaper, too. We call that a win-win! Making homemade applesauce is a great way to use up that big bag of apples that's been sitting in your fridge for two weeks. (It's okay… we all do it.)

What happens if you freeze applesauce? ›

Does homemade applesauce go bad? ›

After you have popped the seal and placed your opened jar of apple sauce in the fridge, it will stay fresh for anywhere between 7-14 days. Homemade apple sauce has a shorter shelf life, ranging from 4-6 days.

Should I peel my apples for applesauce? ›

Peel and core apples if you plan to simply mash them into chunky applesauce. Leave the peels on if you're going to pass the cooked pieces through a food mill, which will separate the skin and seeds from the apple mash. Leaving the skin on while the apple cooks also adds color to the sauce.

Why did my homemade applesauce turn brown? ›

Many people report that the top of the jar of applesauce gradually turns brown. What is happening is the sauce has not been heated adequately to stop all enzymatic reactions and there is enough oxygen in the headspace to react with the enzymes.

Digestive Health

It can help to neutralize the effects of irritable bowel syndrome. Pectin also acts as a prebiotic, which feeds good gut bacteria and promotes good digestive health.

This process is called osmosis, and it dilutes the sugar-water inside the cells. But all the water coming in raises the pressure inside the cells so that eventually, the cell walls burst. That helps break down the apple into an even, golden sauce, which you can sweeten after cooking.

How does Mott's make their applesauce? ›

Upon arrival at the plant, apples go through a process that involves inspection, washing, removal of seeds, skin, carpal and the stems, cooking and then packaging into 25 varieties of Mott's natural, organic and fruit-flavored applesauce and natural apple juice.
