    • You want to choose a dry, full-bodied wine for this recipe. I like Cabernet Sauvignon, but a Zinfandel, Merlot, or Syrah would also work well.
    • Bring the wine to a simmer, but don’t let it boil. Boiling will change the flavor.
    • Adjust the sweetness to your preference.
    • Keep it warm, not hot. If you’re serving it at a party, use a slow cooker or a heat diffuser on the stove to keep it warm without boiling.
    • You can make a non-alcoholic version using grape juice or apple cider as the base. Add the same spices and ingredients, and omit the wine.

      FAQs

What's the difference between mulled wine and Glühwein? ›

Mulled wine is hot spiced wine. Gluhwein is a German term for exactly the same. However, they might not necessarily taste the same way because there are so many different recipes, spice mixes and wines to choose from.

What is the difference between glögg and Glühwein? ›

First, I saw it referenced that Glühwein is often less sweet than Glögg. This seems to be because the latter is often made with dry red wine, then purposefully sweetened with the chosen spices and addition of fruits and nuts. Second, it seems quite popular to emphasize the orange fruits in Glühwein.

What is the best wine for Glühwein? ›

I recommend looking for a bottle of Zinfandel, Merlot, Grenache, Brandy: Similar to sangria, it's also traditional to spike your mulled wine with an extra bit of liqueur. Brandy is the traditional choice, but Cointreau (or another orange liqueur) or tawny port are also delicious alternatives.

Does the alcohol cook out of Glühwein? ›

But fear not, hot cider, hot toddy, and mulled wine lovers: Around 85 percent of your beloved alcohol will survive the heating process. The U.S. Department of Agriculture did a study in 2007 that nailed down the numbers with the magic of the scientific method.

Why do Germans drink Glühwein? ›

Glühwein is traditionally served at stalls at Christmas markets across Germany and Austria to keep people warm as they shop and socialize. This recipe is for the German Glühwein, which literally translates to glow-wine, because of how you feel after you've been drinking tiny mugs outside in December.

Is mulled wine very alcoholic? ›

Unless you keep it boiling for a while it won't lose much alcohol content. While pure ethanol does evapoate quickly at a relatively low temperature, the lower the alcohol content gets, the more slowly does more alcohol evaporate at that temperature. Mulled wine will typically have between eight and 13 per cent abv.

What is the alcohol level in Glühwein? ›

Officially speaking, the drink is defined by the spices used in it, namely cloves and / or cinnamon. The base also needs to be either white or red wine and have an alcohol content of at least 7%.

What is the best cheap wine for mulled wine? ›

The best red wines for mulled wines taste bright and fresh, such as Grenache, Tempranillo, Sangiovese, fruit-forward Pinot Noir. Inexpensive Bordeaux is another great choice for mulled wine; in fact, claret was a traditional choice for British mulled wine in William Shakespeare's day.

Why is my Glühwein bitter? ›

You need to infuse the wine long enough with the spices to take on their flavour but DON'T ON ANY ACCOUNT LET THE MIXTURE BOIL as you'll be left with a bitter taste.

Should Glühwein be served warm or cold? ›

As we point out in the below directions, Glühwein is served hot and should be sipped slowly just as you would with a fresh cup of coffee. Of course, you do not have to splurge on crystal glassware to sip Gluhwein. A regular mug is a fine alternative.

      Is mulled wine healthy? ›

The red wine base in mulled wine brings its own set of health benefits. Resveratrol is associated with heart health benefits and may help protect the lining of blood vessels, lower bad cholesterol levels, and prevent blood clots. When consumed in moderation, red wine has been linked to a reduced risk of heart disease.

Does mulled wine help sleep? ›

Having a glass of wine or other "nightcap" before bed has long been thought of as a way to help someone sleep, especially if it's a warm drink like a hot toddy, a brandy, or mulled wine since the temperature allegedly promotes sleepiness.

Can you overheat mulled wine? ›

The key to successfully heating up mulled wine is to take it up to a nice warm temperature without boiling it. Wine has a lower boiling point than water, and overheating it will cook off some of the alcohol, resulting in an unpleasant bitter flavour.
